LaboratoryQuality Officer

The St. Maarten Laboratory Services NV (SLS) is an ambitious and rapidly developing organization in St. Maarten. SLS provides a 24-hour diagnostic service to the patients of the local general hospital, ambulatory patients, and the public health department. Our mission is to provide high-quality service to our clients in a timely manner. SLS is accredited for both the ISO 15189 & ISO/IEC 17025 standard.

The need for the quality service is required both nationally and internationally. SLS strives to maintain its high-quality service to St. Maarten and the regional islands. The purpose of this position is to maintain, monitor and further develop, the laboratory quality system and advising in the field of quality assurance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee SLS’s Quality Management System (QMS) to ensure quality throughout all stages of the laboratory.
  • Identify and seek appropriate resources for the functioning and improvement of the QMS.
  • Conduct periodic internal laboratory audits for process control and improvement as well as staff competency. Document audit observations, and make recommendations for corrective actions.
  • Drafting a yearly quality plan together with the Laboratory director
  • Contribute to the policy development commissioned by the director to guarantee the quality of services conducted by the organization
  • Assist in ensuring continuous compliance with requirements of accrediting, and regulatory agencies.
  • Review and update policy and procedure manuals as needed
  • Maintain oversight of the Proficiency testing enrollment
  • Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either correct the problems or immediately notify the laboratory management.
  • Follow established corrective action policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within established acceptable levels of performance.
  • Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from established performance specifications
  • Provide training on compliance and quality management tools to staff as needed.

Requirements and skills needed

  • Completed bachelor’s degree in a relevant laboratory area: a management training is desirable
  • Minimum three years experience in a laboratory environment
  • Demonstrate coaching and training skills to train and coach staff
  • Knowledge of and experience with laboratory quality systems ISO 15189 and ISO / IEC 17025
  • Knowledge and experience with laboratory (automated) information systems
  • Experience with document management systems
  • Strong analytical and communication skills
  • Time management
  • Good command of the English and Dutch language

Microbiologist Analyst

The St. MaartenLaboratory ServicesNV (SLS) Molecular and Microbiology Department is an ambitious and rapidly developing organization inSt. Maarten. SLS provides 24 hours diagnostic services to the patients of the local general hospital, ambulatory patients and the public health department. Our mission is to provide excellent diagnostic quality and service to our clients. SLShas applied to be to accredited according to ISO 15189 standard.

The purpose of this position is to complete the enthusiastic and dedicated team of the Molecular and Microbiology Department. The tasks include all common microbiological techniques and molecular testing on closed format platforms. The workflow is embedded in an up-to-date laboratory information system. All workflow in the department is supervised by a fully licensed clinical microbiologist M.D.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform diagnostic molecular and microbiological tests
  • Provide coverage of services within a small team seven days a week
  • Perform calibrations and first tier maintenance of laboratory equipment
  • Perform quality control and proficiency testing
  • Writing and updating quality reports and analytical procedures
  • Performing troubleshooting and improvement cycles
  • Take action and escalate proactively on detected issues

Required skills

  • A degree in Microbiological Laboratory work at the level of Dutch HLO (Hoger Laboratorium Onderwijs)
  • Communicates skillfully with internal (and external) parties
  • Performs duties with a sense of responsibility toward patient care
  • Knowledge of and experience with all microbiological laboratory techniques and hygiene and safety requirements
  • Preferably minimum three years of experience in a medical laboratory environment
  • Knowledge of and experience with ISO 15189 and CLSI quality systems
  • Knowledge of and experience with laboratory information systems
  • Good command of the English language

Environmental Microbiologist Analyst

Our mission is to provide excellent diagnostic quality and service to our clients.

The purpose of this position is to complete the enthusiastic and dedicated team of the Environmental Department. The tasks will include all common microbiological water and food testing. The workflow is embedded in an up-to-date laboratory information system.

  • Perform calibrations and first tier maintenance of laboratory equipment
  • Perform quality control and proficiency testing

  • Take action and escalate proactively on detected issues
